Catherine Casey MD (she/her) is an Associate Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Virginia, and a co-founder of UVA’s comprehensive, multidisciplinary Gender Health Program. She is the sole WPATH-certified physician in Virginia, and trains health professionals of all stages in gender-affirming medical care. Her awards related to advocacy, teaching, and serving gender-diverse patients include the 2020 John H. Casteen III Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award and the 2022 Medical Society of Virginia’s Salute to Service Award.

Dr. Casey sees patients of all ages and genders for primary care at UVA Health. Her interests include providing competent and compassionate care to LGBTQ+ patients — and teaching faculty, students, and residents to do the same.

Desired Outcomes for This Training

Upon completion of this learning activity, participants should be able to:

  • Define gender identity, including transgender, cisgender, and nonbinary.  Explain how this differs from sexual orientation and behavior.
  • Describe how to create a clinical environment that is inclusive of gender-diverse patients.
  • List small changes to language and approach to the physical exam that make a big difference in the comfort of gender diverse patients.
