Takara Washington, president of Diversity in Nursing for a Better Community, said she appreciates UVA's focus on sharing "diverse stories," and where she's grown into a "passionate, skilled nurse."
Do you 'Dare to Dream' about becoming a nurse, and attending UVA?

Third-year UVA nursing students Takara Washington and Nyasia Harris (both BSN `22) and their fellow students in Diversity in Nursing for a Better Community want to meet you.

Their group - DNBC for short - will host its annual "Dare to Dream" event January 16 and 23 (more information and a DNBC 2021 flyer here) to offer prospective nursing students from all over the commonwealth a look at UVA, the nursing profession, and the School in particular. With an all-virtual event, say the students, and with applications to the undergraduate BSN program now at an all-time high, they're excited about attracting like-minded future nurses from all over Virginia who, like them, are fiercely passionate about caring for others.

For Harris, her time at UVA is the culmination of a lifetime of plans.

“When I was a little kid, I dreamed of having a career where I was able to help others,” said Harris. “I chose UVA because I knew the professors would do their best to help me accomplish my dream of being a nurse."

"Throughout my time at UVA, my interest in nursing has only grown stronger.”

UVA, explained Washington, DNBC's president, "offered me an inclusive environment to share my perspective, and grow into a passionate, skilled nurse. I believe it offers everyone the opportunity to grow by sharing their own diverse stories, while learning from others.

"Since becoming president of Diversity in Nursing for a Better Community," she added, "it has been my goal to spotlight this space for students like myself who have a passion for nursing and a story to share. Our organization's annual "Dare to Dream” event provides a fun, engaging opportunity to do just that."

Though Dare to Dream - now in its fourth year - will be completely virtual for 2021, it'll be no less informative. The two-Saturday event will include a school tour, Q&A sessions with admissions officials and students, a look at a day in the life of a nursing student, and even a nursing skills workshop. Advisors, admissions, and financial aid representatives will be on hand to answer questions.

Washington and Harris and their fellow students will huddle with prospective students and parents to do the rest.

Curious about nursing, and about UVA's programs? Join DNBC students and our friendly admissions officials and professors who'll show you why our nursing programs remain Virginia's very best.
