MESHA JONES: Hi. My name is Mesha Jones, and I'm a Clinical Instructor at the School of Nursing. I always tell people I chose nursing because of a TV show called ER. And I saw everything that Carol Hathaway was to her patients. She was a nurse. She was caring. She advocated for everything that her patient needs. But also, I grew up in this community, and it has been a great way for me to give back and to advocate for not only health issues, but other issues that may affect those that we take care of.
Taking the students into the clinical environment and seeing their face on the first day, the deer-in-the-headlight look. And then, at the end, they're not only taking care of their patients, but they're going through the unit and helping the nurse with other patients on the unit. And then they start asking those important questions and putting it all together, of thinking about how the health diagnosis is impacting the patient financially and the resources, where they live. And when they have those a-ha moments and they start asking me the tough questions is what I enjoy the most.
I think students should choose UVA School of Nursing for the opportunity to network within the school and, also, on the health system side. It's an opportunity to get a broad view of the patients that we take care of, not just in the community, but in the commonwealth. It's an opportunity to learn, to grow, to be part of something special, to realize that you're not in this alone, and to also realize that, in nursing, you can do anything.
Bold. And the reason I chose the word bold is because, as an organization, we have to be bold in everything that we do, teach in their future how to deal with the challenges that will come ahead.
