Lauren Elyse Catlett, PhD, RN, CNL
Biography
With a background in aging services, long-term care, and hospice, Catlett’s research centers on the care of older adults with a focus on palliative care and advance care planning. Catlett also does research and publishes on topics related to health equity for older adults of diverse racial backgrounds and gender identities, adopting a community-oriented approach to aging research that integrates quantitative, qualitative, and participatory methods.
Catlett also has a background in art and design to their nursing philosophy, practice, and scholarship, and has designed and published books on arts and aging, including Shared Doings and Sayings (2010), a book of stories and artwork by people living with dementia, and Little Star (2016), a memoir of a transgender woman in hospice care.
Catlett's dissertation, "Shaping affirming futures with elders of all gender experiences (SAFEage)," used an innovative human-centered design approach to co-design an advance care planning resource with older adults of diverse gender identities. Catlett’s work has earned funding from the American Psychological Foundation and the UVA School of Nursing Compassionate Care Research program.
