Biography
Joel Anderson, PhD, RN, is a three-time graduate of the University of Virginia, having earned a bachelor's degree in history in 2003, an MSN in 2008, and a PhD nursing in 2022, completing a dissertation under the guidance of Drs. Kenneth R. White, Barbra Mann Wall, and Arlene Keeling titled, "Nurses as formal leaders in United States civilian hospitals: 1891-1991."
Over the past 25 years, Anderson has held various leadership roles in nursing operations at UVA Health University Medical Center leading numerous strategic initiatives to enhance patient experience, safety, and quality of care and developing formal nursing leadership positions throughout the organization to promote professionalism in nursing. He's taught and mentored students in the School's Clinical Nurse Leader master's program, focusing on leading health system change initiatives. In August, 2025, he was appointed co-director, with Ann Kellams, of the Wisdom and Wellbeing Program.
