Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Specialty in the DNP Program

Preparing students in the DNP program to be advanced practice nurses and nurse practitioners in primary and preventative care environments as FNPs

  • In-person classes about 1x/month, with the balance of learning completed online
  • Full- and part-time options available
  • 750 clinical practicum hours, and guidance in finding clinical placements with qualified preceptors
  • Graduates are eligible for the FNP certification exam administered by ANCC or AANPBC
  • Guaranteed admission for UVA School of Nursing alumni
  • Application deadline: January 5

As the U.S. healthcare system shifts toward wellness, rather than illness care, family nurse practitioners (FNPs) occupy a critical and expanding role in primary care. Our FNP specialty track, for students enrolled in the BSN to DNP program, graduate as advanced practice nurses prepared to emphasize community-based primary healthcare for individuals and families across the lifespan.

The FNP specialty track is offered to students enrolled in the BSN to DNP pathway program and as a post-professional certificate.

Students who attend UVA are mentored by faculty members who are experts in their field as educators, clinicians, researchers. Their experiences are additionally enriched by access to other disciplines across the University, including religion, ethics, contemplative sciences, mindfulness, and medicine. All graduate nursing students are required to have a laptop.

Though it depends on the degree with which students enter the program (whether it's a BSN or MSN), DNP students who choose the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) concentration typically complete core classes, specialty courses, electives, and 14 credits (750 hours) of direct care practicum.
