Frequently Asked Questions - BSN Program for High School Seniors
Do I need to meet with someone at the nursing school? Does the nursing school interview applicants?
U.Va. does not interview any undergraduate degree applicants. If you would like to visit the School of Nursing (SON), we offer information sessions most days of the week and sponsor 4 to 5 information sessions for prospective students yearly. For more information, call (434) 924-0141.
What kind of experience are you looking for prior to applying to the School of Nursing?
Strong academic experience and some kind of exposure or experience in health care or nursing. Your experience may fall within a wide continuum of exposure to the field. You should be taking the most challenging courses available at your high school and have a solid academic record.
When can I visit the School of Nursing?
We offer student-led tours of the school most days during the academic year (please phone ahead). One of the Assistant Deans also hosts our Admissions Chats (twice a week). We schedule information sessions approximately 4 to 5 times a year.
How many applications do you usually receive each year?
Our applications have been steadily rising the past three years. The past two years we have received more than 300 completed applications for a class size of 56.
When am I notified about admission?
Admission letters are mailed April 1.
What are the average test scores and GPAs of nursing applicants?
Because grading scales can vary from school to school, an average GPA is hard to compute. When we review academic records we are looking to see that you have taken challenging courses and done very well in them.
What are the best classes for me to take in high school to prepare me for nursing school?
You should be enrolled in the most challenging college preparation courses your high school offers.
Will the nursing school prepare me for medical school?
A baccalaureate curriculum in nursing is not equivalent to a typical pre-med curriculum. Although it may be possible to combine the pre-reqs necessary for med school with a nursing curriculum, we strongly encourage you to further investigate the two fields prior to applying to our nursing program. There are many differences between a career in medicine and nursing and our program is designed to prepare you for the field of nursing.
What kind of financial aid do you offer?
All financial aid for undergraduate students at U.Va. is administered through the U.Va. financial aid office. To apply, you need to complete the federal FAFSA form, a U.Va. financial aid form, and a SON financial aid form. All aid is need-based but all need is filled.
