Applying to UVA

Congratulations on your decision to pursue nursing education at the University of Virginia School of Nursing! We offer exceptional programs for students who want to become a nurse, as well as advanced programs for RNs who want to advance in the profession. The options are many, and the quality remains consistently high across programs. The University of Virginia is consistently ranked as one of the top two public universities in the United States, and the School of Nursing—well-ranked in its own right—is an integral part of the world-class UVA Health System.

Undergraduate

• You're a high school graduate, or will be soon (Traditional BSN program for first-year entry)
• You're a transfer student from another college or university (External Transfer Program)
• You're a current UVA student from another major (Internal Transfer Program).
• You’re a registered nurse (RN) with an associate's degree or diploma and would like to advance your career or professional commitment to nursing (RN to BSN program)

Graduate

• You have a bachelor's or graduate degree in a field other than nursing and are looking for a career change (Master's Entry: Clinical Nurse Leader program)
• You have a BSN degree and want to advance your nursing career with a master's degree (MSN program)
• You have a MSN degree and seek certification in an additional nursing specialty (Certificate programs)
• You have a BSN or master's degree in nursing and want a doctoral degree in nursing (PhD or DNP programs)
• You have a BSN or MSN degree and want to take a course on a non-degree basis (Visiting Student Status)
• You are an international student with a BSN or MSN and want to pursue a graduate degree (international graduate student)
• You want to do post-doctoral work in nursing (post-doctoral fellowships)

Admissions Deadlines

Most nursing degree programs have specific admission application deadlines. You are welcome to submit the online application before the dates listed below. The undergraduate, MSN and DNP admissions committees start reviewing files after the set deadlines.

The PhD in Nursing committee will start to review applications before the December deadline. 

Admissions Information Sessions

Thank you for your interest in the School of Nursing.  We host general information sessions about the undergraduate and graduate programs throughout the year. These sessions provide information on the school's academic programs, admissions requirements, and financial aid along with break-out sessions with faculty and students. A tour of the nursing school is also conducted. These information sessions are held in the Claude Moore Nursing Education Building - click here for parking information and directions. 

Note that parking is free after 5:00pm on weekdays or all day weekends in the McLeod Hall garage.  We encourage visitors to park in the McLeod Garage for the information sessions. Parking at the UVA Medical Center garage is for patients only.    Parking is available at the Central Grounds Parking Garage (but plan on a 15-20 minutes to walk from the Central Grounds Parking Garage to the School of Nursing).

In addition, for those looking for more specialized information about specific programs, the Internal Transfer, RN to BSN, DNP, and PhD program directors also host information sessions during the academic year about their respective programs. All of these sessions will be held in McLeod Hall. The dates/times for these sessions are:

Admissions Chatroom

The Assistant Dean for Admissions & Financial Aid hosts weekly sessions in the Admissions & Student Services chatroom each semester. The dates/times for these are posted on the chatroom login page. Pop in and learn more about the undergraduate or graduate programs, the admissions requirements, financial aid, career prospects, or anything that is on your mind.

Clay Hysell, Assistant Dean for Admissions and Financial Aid, will host these chats most Monday and Tuesday evenings from 8-9 p.m. Eastern time.   Undergraduate applicants are encouraged to attend the Monday chats, and graduate applicants are welcome on the Tuesday chats.
