BSN Program for High School Seniors
The University of Virginia offers a program leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Students are admitted to the School of Nursing in the first year. The degree is awarded after satisfactory completion of a prescribed program of study (see downloads link).
All students at the School of Nursing take courses in anatomy and physiology, growth and development, pharmacology, pathophysiology, administration, and nursing practice. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination.
The School of Nursing accepts academically motivated students into our four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.
In every case, an applicant must be in good academic and social standing. Selection of applicants to the School of Nursing is competitive, based primarily on scholastic ability demonstrated by secondary school records and scores on the SAT and/or ACT. Relevant volunteer or work experience in a clinical setting will be taken into consideration and may be a factor in the selection process.
Full-time study is required.
Transfer of Credit
On presentation of a school transcript, students accepted for transfer to the School of Nursing will be granted transfer credit for academic course work taken at an accredited institution if the grade earned was at least one letter grade better than the minimum passing grade, and if the courses correspond to ones offered at the University. Questions regarding acceptability of specific courses for transfer should be referred to the Office of Admissions and Student Services in the School of Nursing.
Clinicals
Clinical nursing classes extend over the Second, Third, and Fourth Years in the BSN curriculum. Students will have in-patient clinical experiences at the University of Virginia Medical Center, Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville, Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville, or Western State Hospital in Staunton.
Clinical experiences in the Community Health course occur on a variety of settings in Charlottesville and in the surrounding counties.
Prerequisites
There are no course prerequisites for the traditional BSN program.
Admission Requirements
First year students applying for admission will enter the School of Nursing at the start of the regular academic session in the fall. The deadline for completed applications is January 2. Official transcripts and standardized test scores must be submitted by the deadline. In addition to the official application form, the applicant should submit secondary school and collegiate transcripts, plus the results of the SAT and/or ACT.
