Ann Baile Hamric joined the UVA faculty in the fall of 1999.  She teaches advanced practice nursing role development and nursing ethics in the School of Nursing, as well as participates in selected ethics classes around grounds.   She is the senior editor of the most widely used graduate text on the subject of advanced nursing roles, Advanced Practice Nursing: An Integrative Approach; the 4th edition of this text was published in 2009.  She has served on national Task Forces related to advanced practice nursing, most recently the American Association of Colleges of Nursing's Task Force on the Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Nursing Practice, which formulated essential competencies for graduates of Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degrees.  In the area of ethics, she is a member of the UVA Health System Ethics Committee and leads the Moral Distress Consultation Service. As a Faculty Affiliate, she works with the Center for Biomedical Ethics and Humanities, and serves on the Faculty Advisory Board of the Institute for Practical Ethics and Public Life. Dr. Hamric received her BSN from Vanderbilt University, her MS in medical-surgical nursing from the University of California at San Francisco, and her PhD in nursing with a concentration in ethics from the University of Maryland.
