A Message From the Dean
Welcome to the University of Virginia School of Nursing – where we combine forward-looking health care education with respect for the proud traditions of our past. When Thomas Jefferson founded his “Academical Village,” he saw the importance of preparing future leaders and citizens for our fledgling country. Today, we’re extending his vision to teach both professional leadership and excellence in caring for the people of this nation and those around the world. At the UVA School of Nursing, we teach excellent nursing skills and sound professional judgment – we are also preparing future leaders of the nursing profession, the largest group of health care professionals, to equip them to meet future challenges in health care.
We are proud that the first endowed nursing professorship in the United States was created here; that the first doctoral nursing program in Virginia was established here and that recently we have added two cutting edge programs: the Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) master’s degree program and the Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP). Since 1901, we have educated professional nurses for positions at every level of health care – with a reputation for excellence in education, research and practice. Our graduates are putting their education to work training tomorrow’s nurses; improving the way health care is delivered through their research; and they are at the bedside in homes, hospitals, and on foreign battlefields.
One of our strengths is a vigorous, collaborative relationship with our partners in the University of Virginia Health System, including the School of Medicine and the Medical Center, which is consistently ranked among the nation’s Top 100 hospitals and which has joined the 3% of the country’s hospitals with Magnet Recognition for its nursing excellence.
We invite you to explore our web site to learn more about all the exciting work being done here.
The nurses we educate in Virginia today will have the knowledge to provide the kind of care we need tomorrow.
