Who should apply?

The School of Nursing accepts transfer students into the second year of our program. Students admitted as transfer students for fall 2021 will graduate from the School of Nursing in May 2024. Transfer students enter as second-year students and complete the BSN in three additional years of study.

We also offer an accelerated pathway for transfer students to earn a BSN in two years (includes two summers and January term).

Transfer students from another school or college within UVA apply via a separate application. Working RNs can apply to the part-time RN to BSN. Students who have already completed a bachelor's degree in another field are ineligible to apply as a second-year transfer, but may have interest in the Clinical Nurse Leader program.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the School of Nursing is competitive. Applications for admission will be considered through the Office of Undergraduate Admission with an initial review in the School of Nursing and may be obtained from the Office of Undergraduate Admission. Particular attention should be paid to the instructions in the application pertaining to transfer students.

To be considered for admission to this program, applicants must:

• Submit a completed application by the March 1 deadline
• Be in good standing, both academically and socially, at the institution or institutions they have attended
• Have completed at least 30 credits of college level work by the end of the spring semester
• For Fall admission:
  • Successfully completed the following prerequisite courses with a grade of a C or better prior to beginning our program in the fall semester:
    • Microbiology (3-4 credits)
    • Chemistry (3-4 credits)
    • Human anatomy and physiology I (4 credits) *
    • Human anatomy and physiology II (4 credits) *
    • Lifespan Development/Developmental Psychology (3 credits) *
    • College Composition (3-6 credits)

Financial Aid

All financial aid for undergraduate students at UVA is administered through UVA Student Financial Services. To apply, you need to complete the federal FAFSA form, the CSS/Profile form, and a School of Nursing financial aid form. All aid is need-based; the University meets 100% of demonstrated need.

Classes

Students in the School of Nursing take classes in anatomy and physiology, growth and development, pharmacology, pathophysiology, leadership, and nursing practice. All students conduct research independently, or as part of teams.

Professional nursing standards and guidelines incorporated in the curriculum: The Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice (AACN, 2008).

Clinicals

Clinical nursing classes extend over the second, third, and fourth years in the BSN curriculum. Clinical experiences occur in a variety of settings at the UVA Medical Center, steps away from the School of Nursing buildings, as well as other local and regional clinical sites. Students typically have in-patient clinical experiences at hospitals in Charlottesville, Richmond, Fishersville, or Staunton. Clinical experiences in the community health course occur on a variety of settings in Charlottesville and in the surrounding counties.

State Authorization and Professional Licensure Disclosures

Upon completion of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, graduates may be eligible for initial professional licensure in another U.S. state by applying to the licensing board or agency in that state.

Enrolled students who change their current (or mailing) address to a state other than Virginia should update this information immediately in the Student Information System as it may impact their ability to complete internship, practicum, or clinical hours, use Title IV funds, or meet licensure or certification requirements in the new state.
