Clinical Simulation Learning Center (CSLC)

The Clinical Simulation Learning Center is located in McLeod Hall and is comprised of the Theresa A. Thomas Intensive Care Simulation Laboratory (Room 3009), the Reed Physical Assessment Laboratory (Room 3013), and two procedural labs (Rooms 3004 and 3006).

The primary objectives of the CSLC are:

-to provide a state-of-the-art learning, teaching, and research environment for students and faculty;
- to promote acquisition of basic and advanced skills/behaviors that are essential for undergraduate nursing students to master;
- to provide resources that will assist acquisition of skills necessary for advanced practice roles;
- to provide an ideal learning environment for supervised and independent practice, throughout the students' academic endeavors;
- towork in cooperation with the University of Virginia Health System and the Medical School in providing a learning environment that promotes professional development of health care providers; and
- to be available as a resource center for students, faculty, and associates – internally and externally

Reba Moyer Childress is a former member of the multi-site, national NLN/Laerdal Simulation Study Group. She is a passionate advocate for simulation in nursing education, and has presented at a variety of conferences throughout the United States and Canada to promote the use of simulation. In 1995 she designed and developed the University of Virginia’s Theresa A. Thomas Intensive Care Simulation Lab, one of the first such facilities in the country. March 2006 she spearheaded the development of the first state-wide Nursing Simulation Users Network Conference for the State of Virginia, hosted by UVa and sponsored by Laerdal Medical Corporation. Because of the outcomes of this venture, this conference will be conducted again in June 2007. Childress is also a founding member of the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL), and was recognized for her contributions to INACSL with their Service Award in June 2006.

Classroom Descriptions - All on third floor of McLeod Hall

3005: Office of the CSL Center Director, Assistant Director and Staff. Location for equipment checkout and viewing of audiovisuals

3004: This is an eight-bed procedural laboratory/classroom (1 pediatric bed, 7 adult beds); Classroom capacity equals sixteen students. Multimedia equipment is available for viewing audiovisual aids.

3006: This is a four-bed procedural laboratory/classroom; Classroom capacity equals fourteen students. Multimedia equipment is available for viewing audiovisual aids.

3009: The Theresa A. Thomas Intensive Care Simulation Laboratory, created in 1995, is a two-bed unit. It is available to assist undergraduate and graduate students in learning how to manage acute or critical care situations. The simulation manikins, Sim-Man and Sim-Baby are major features of this unit. This lab was made possible by a generous grant from the Theresa A. Thomas Memorial Foundation.

3013: The Charles L. Reed Physical Assessment Laboratory is an eight-bed unit. In 2001, this lab was renovated and dedicated in honor of Mr. Charles L. Reed, the former president of the Theresa A. Thomas Memorial Foundation whose generous funding made the renovations possible.


Classroom Equipment Reservations

Reservations for Rooms 3004, 3006, 3009, and 3013 are required and should be placed through the CSLC Director (reba@virginia.edu). Audiovisual resources are available in each lab. When resources are needed by faculty for teaching purposes, please submit a requisition to the CSLC Director at least 5 to 7 days in advance. Requisition forms are available electronically via the “I:CSLC” directory).


Policies

Food and Drinks are not permitted in the CSL Center. This policy is reflective of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidelines and should be strictly enforced by faculty because of safety and the need to preserve laboratory equipment and resources.

Faculty, teaching assistants, and students using CSLC classrooms will be responsible for leaving labs clean and in order prior to departing. Whenever possible, sit on chairs, rather than beds. If beds are used, please remove and fold bedspreads first and replace soiled linens PRN. Thank you for your help in keeping these labs/classrooms in excellent shape for frequent tours!

Audiovisuals, Equipment, Models

A copy of the software and audiovisual holdings document is available in the "I-CSLC" directory (under AUDIOVIS.CSLC). Information regarding educational equipment and materials is available in the CSL Center.

Reserved Materials

Materials pertaining to laboratory or clinical skills and items placed on reserve by faculty members for other courses may be signed out at the CSLC front desk in 3005 (CSL Center Office).

New Equipment Requests

Please provide CSLC Director with requests for new equipment. Arrangements will be made to borrow the equipment if purchasing it is not an option.
