In her role as the president of the AANC, Dean Jeanette Lancaster has helped to broker a joint effort between the AACN and Johnson & Johnson to establish the J&J/AACN Minority Nurse Faculty Scholars program. The primary goal of the program is to help "address the nursing faculty shortage and diversify the people who serve as faculty," said Lancaster. Read the full article:

Explorations
Fall 07 theme is Sustainability. "Sustainable Health for Sustainable Communities" highlights UVA's initiative to harness its expert faculty and technology to address the challenges of geographic medicine. The Center for Global Health and the School of Nursing work together to support research fellows and provide classes for undergraduates. Associate Dean Sarah Farrell has worked on several projects involving global health and the article mentioned that she had recently returned from working on a study in South Africa involving depression.

WCAV Channel 19
Second Year Nursing student Sinziana Hada was interviewed on camera at the kickoff rally of the 2007 Symposium on Race and Society on September 30th at UVA. Hada said, "There's starting to be more awareness about health disparities right here in Charlottesville and in the country as well. Watch the whole story: WCAV Channel 19

At the Intersection of People and Computers
Impact is the School of Engineering's Research magazine. Inside the Fall issue, you'll read about an interdisciplinary collaboration between Assistant Professor Gregory Gerling, Dr. Marcus Martin in the School of Medicine, Assistant Professor of Nursing Reba M. Childress and graduate student Sarah Risgbee (SE '08) to build a simulator for prostate cancer that can reproduce 96 different disease states.

Jeanette Lancaster was quoted in a front page story describing her development activities as dean as part of a larger story in the Washington Post about UVA's $3 billion campaign. Washington Post

Daily Progress
As we all know, UVA is looking to replace half of its deans. The Daily Progress mentions that Jeanette Lancaster is one of the deans who will be leaving next spring. Daily Progress. Lancaster who has been on the job since 1989 is the longest serving dean at UVA. Daily Progress.

Yoga Journal
Kim Innes has been mixing her love of science with yoga for a long time. At first, her yoga practice was solely for personal relaxation, but in the context of her work with the Center for the Study of Complementary and Alternative Therapies (CSCAT), yoga is clearly beneficial in disease intervention, particularly those of metabolic origin. Daily Progress
SON student Randa Samaha, whose sister was tragically killed last April at Virginia Tech was mentioned and pictured in a photo in a story about a "lie in" that UVA students held in protest to perceived lax gun laws. October 16 marked the 6 month anniversary of the shootings. Daily Progress

Metropolis
The October 2007 issue features an article about a new product, "Centé" a health-care chair for patients and providers. Somewhat based on the famous Herman Miller Aeron Chair, this chair offers functionality specifically geared to patient safety and comfort. The best news for the SON is that design for the chair began with research at UVA's SON Health Care Product Evaluation Center (HCPEC)! Metropolis.

Article about the UVA Health System awarding $3000 scholarships to 16 employees to encourage those employees to go to nursing school or seek a more advanced nursing degree.
