Make a Gift to Support Care and Research for Older Adults
Consider
how important it is to you that you and your loved ones—perhaps your
elderly parents or grandparents—are cared for by health professionals
trained to recognize and respond to the specific needs of aging adults.
By the year 2025 more than 25 percent of Virginia’s population will be
65 years of age and older. Demographic projections indicate that the
need for nurses specially trained in the care of older adults will
continue to grow until the year 2030 and beyond.
The UVa School of Nursing seeks to positively influence the quality of
care provided for older adults in Virginia and the nation by developing
innovative programs to meet the unique needs of this growing segment of
our population.
Dr. Courtney Lyder, the school's leader in
gerontology initiatives, helped the school launch a post-master’s
geriatric nurse practitioner (GNP) program in 2004, funded by the John
A. Hartford Foundation. This innovative program is one of only a
handful of such programs that offers the didactic component completely
online, with the clinical component conducted in the community where
the student resides. A GNP masters program, funded by the U. S. Health
Resources and Services Administration, is currently in development. It
will place particular emphasis on wound care and community/rural
health, complementing the post-master’s GNP program. Work is also in
process to strengthen geriatric nursing at the baccalaureate level and
deliver geriatric nursing content in Southwest Virginia.
The University of Virginia and the U.Va. Health
System have identified geriatric health care as one priority area of
growth and development in the next decade, and have established the Institute on Aging.
The School of Nursing will be taking the lead in developing programs of
research on the nursing side of this comprehensive effort.
Gifts to establish endowments for student and
faculty support (outlined below) will significantly advance the
development of the School of Nursing program in gerontology nursing.
Your thoughtful investment will help ensure that the care of older
Americans will improve with the discovery of new and better practice
models through experimentation and research.
