'Hoos Coming to Dinner

Bice Lecture
On November 7, noted nursing historian Ellen D. Baer, PHD, RN, FAAN, presented the Zula Mae Baber Bice Memorial Lecture as part of the Medical Center Hour lecture series. Almost 200 students, clinicians, faculty, and alumni heard the presentation Do Trained Nurses Work for Love, or Do They Work for Money? The talk explored contrasting expectations of nursing and medical professionals in terms of their professional self-determination and economic recognition. Nursing Leadership Forum

Over the weekend of Nov. 9-10, twenty alumni and more than 150 students participated in this popular education and mentoring event. The 2007 forum was our biggest ever. Offering panel presentations on graduate study and job searching, to networking and creating work-life balance, the forum explored issues relevant to new nurses & forged valuable connections among alums and students. |

CNHI 15th Anniversary Celebration
On November 7, the Center for Nursing Historical Inquiry celebrated its 15th anniversary with a reception at the Colonnade Club. Photos below: Barbara Brodie and Arlene Keeling explained the origins of the Center and then posed for a photo representing the past, present and future of the CNHI.
International Forums
CNL students Meredith Cooley, Tim Cunningham, Jess Keim, and Jess Silcox presented Creating Health Partnerships in Lesotho and South Africa on November 13 as part of the International Forum series of lectures. Upcoming International Forums will include The Work of Nursing Teams with Physicians for Peace (February 5) and Mayan Medical Aid: Reflections of a Medical Spanish Immersion Program in Guatemala (March 25).
Nursing Students Without Borders
Nursing Students without Borders (NSWB) President Megan Benckert and member Lindsey Wilson visited El Salvador in October to consult with Fernando Cortez, MD, Director of the Red Cross clinic, and his staff in San Sebastian. The clinic provides the only 24/7 health care in its area and is seriously in need of a new facility (see photo above right). NSWB has already purchased land for a new clinic and is now in the process of securing donations to fund construction. School Of Nursing Expansion Update

It really looks like a building now! Brick facade construction is underway and will continue through late January. Work to "close in" the building is on schedule for completion by the end of December.
The School has also received preliminary space re-allocation plans for the McLeod Hall renovation project, targeted to begin next summer. We anticipate that we will need approximately $7 million in private support to complete the renovations. More precise estimates are forthcoming.

Get Creative - Health Care Literary Journal Launches
If you are involved in providing, studying, teaching or researching patient care, you are eligible to submit art or writing to Hospital Drive, an on-line journal of U.Va. School of Medicine. Hospital Drive is looking for poetry, short fiction, personal essay, reviews (performance, book, art), photography and visual art (painting, drawing, sculpture, mixed media). Submissions are made on-line and will be reviewed anonymously by the editorial board based on content and quality of the work. The journal will publish twice a year. Doctoral student Nena Patterson presented a poster at the annual conference of the American Association for the History of Nursing.
Second year nursing student Sinziana Hada was interviewed on camera at the kickoff rally for the UVa 2007 Symposium on Race and Society.
BSN Class of 2009 students Alicia Dean, Eleanor Donovan, Larkin Hamrick, Margaret Morrison, Amy Nylund, Lauren Starkey, and Diane Trausch received Intermediate Honors recognition in October. This high distinction is for students in the top 20% of their class after two years at the University.
Alumni Achievements
Recent CNL graduate, Courtney Grant (MSN 2007) created an abstract of her leadership project and submitted it to the Emergency Nurses Association 2008 Leadership Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii. The title of her accepted poster presentation is Retention Intervention: The Preservation of Wisdom. Co-authors include Audrey Snyder (PhD, 2007) & fellow CNL graduate Casey Boland (MSN 2007).
Martha Raile Alligood, PhD, RN (BSN 1973) was inducted as a Fellow in the Academy of Nursing Education at the NLN Education Summit in September 2007 in Phoenix, AZ. Martha resides in Chocwinity, NC.

You read in Charts & Paths about their accomplishments and their unwavering dedication to teaching students and pursuing research that will improve health care for all Americans. They're our School of Nursing faculty, and we think they're a truly outstanding group of teachers, scholars and clinicians. To show your appreciation for their work and to help the school recruit more faculty members like them, consider a gift this holiday season to the Jeanette Lancaster Fund for Faculty Excellence. As you'll recall from the last issue of C&P, the Lancaster Fund was started by the Advisory Board chair Becky Ruegger to honor Dean Lancaster's many years of service to nursing faculty and students at U.Va. Established at $500,000, we want to grow the principal to $1 million (by this summer, if possible, before the dean steps down!) Faculty Achievements
Arlene Keeling, now President of the American Association for the History of
Nursing, was named the recipient of the Lavinia L. Dock Award for "exemplary historical writing" for her recent book Nursing and the Privilege of Prescription, 1893-2000. She received her award at the association's annual conference in White Plains, NY.
Associate Dean Sarah Farrell has obtained certification as Clincal Nurse Leader.
Clay Hysell 's Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP) is now in its 3rd year of funding with a $90,000 grant, an increase from 2005 and 2006. 85% of the debt is forgiven when a fulltime student becomes a nurse faculty member anywhere in the US after graduation.
Marianne Baernholdt received a $257,804 K01 Grant from NINR for: Impact of Nurse Work Environment on Rural Quality of Care and Clinical Outcomes. She will be surveying staff nurses in rural hospitals in Virginia and North Carolina and examining how community, hospital, nursing unit characteristics, and the nurse work environment impact quality of care indicators and clinical outcomes.
Courtney Lyder is now a member of the National Advisory council for the new RWJ Foundation Nursing Faculty Scholars Program intended to help create a new generation of nursing faculty. Other members include Kathleen Dracup (Dean, UCLA), Nancy Fugate Woods (Dean, University of Washington), Afef Meleis (Dean, University of Pennsylvania), Patricia Grady (Director, NINR), and Jane Henney (former Commissioner, Food & Drug Administration.)
Elizabeth Merwin has been invited to serve as a member of the Health Systems Research (HSR) study section of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) from October 1, 2007-September 30, 2011. The HSR committee is one of the standing study sections of the Health Services Research Initial Review Group (IRG).
Carolyn Ramwell has been invited to join Project Peds: Sri Lanka Tsunami Relief in Sri Lanka. Former Presidents Bush and Clintons' Tsunami foundation gave $400K to start the project. The World Children's Initiative (WCI), the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, and the Children’s National Medical Center joined together to launch Project Peds with the intent to create a tertiary care and teaching facility in Sri Lanka that will serve as a model for other state-managed children’s healthcare facilities in Sri Lanka and other developing nations.
At the closing Plenary session of the Sigma Theta Tau 39 Biennial Convention, the 2007 Melanie C. Dreher Outstanding Dean Award for Excellence in Chapter Support was presented to Dean Jeanette Lancaster. The award recognizes a nursing program administrator who actively supports honor society chapter activities. Additionally, Our Beta Kappa chapter received its 3rd Key Award for Chapter Excellence.
Catherine Ratliff and her team (Carolyn Eddins, Marilu Dixon, David Mercer, and Patty Carver) received the Charles L. Brown for Patient Care Quality for their Presentation of the Pressure Ulcer Rates at the UVA Health System.
