DR. JEANETTE LANCASTER PRESENTS TESTIMONY BEFORE THE LHHS APPROPRIATIONS SUBCOMMITTEE
American Association of Colleges of Nursing / March 29, 2006
In one of her first official duties as AACN President, Dr. Jeanette Lancaster presented testimony before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (LHHS) on behalf of the Tri-Council for Nursing. The Tri-Council, a coalition of four nursing organizations including AACN, the American Nurses Association, the American Organization of Nurse Executives and the National League for Nursing, is concerned that current funding levels for Nursing Workforce Development programs (Title VIII of the Public Health Service Act) are insufficient to maintain an adequate nursing workforce. The group is advocating for $175 million in funding for nursing education programs which represents a $25 million increase from last year's funding level.

GWU EASES STUDENTS' PATH TO EDUCATION
By Susan Kinzie for the Washington Post / Thursday, March 30, 2006
Oscar Garibay didn't even think of college for himself. His dad, who had gone through only fifth grade in Mexico, understood hard work but didn't know how important an education could be. And Garibay, one of nine children with never enough to go around, was just glad to survive childhood, he said.

 The Legacy Continues

On Sunday, May 22 one hundred and thirty-six new U.Va. nurses entered the workforce, plus fifty-five advanced practice nurses at the master's, post-master's, and doctoral level.

Our graduates represent the future of nursing.
To invest in them is to invest in the future of health care.

A Milestone Event: Snapshots of the Groundbreaking

Dean Lancaster and President John T. Casteen presided at the ceremonial groundbreaking for the new Claude Moore Nursing Education Building, named in honor of the benefactor whose foundation has given $5 million (the largest gift in the school's history) to support this important project and the renovations of McLeod Hall.

As almost 200 people clustered under and around a tent on a rainy Saturday morning on the construction site (April 8, 2006) Dean Jeanette Lancaster refused to concede that the rain could fall on our parade. “We need it and it promotes growth,” she noted, as she proclaimed that growth was indeed what this project was all about. She added, "This is our mud, and we're proud of it!"

The first group to join the dean and president at the shovels represented the donors and volunteers who have brought the school to this pivotal point: Cindi Colyer Allen, president of the Nursing Alumni Association, Lucien L. Bass III, chair of the school's Advisory Board, and James C. Roberts, former chair of the Advisory Board, president of the Theresa A. Thomas Memorial Foundation, and nursing education advocate.  Unfortunately, the representative of the Claude Moore Foundation was unable to attend.

The second group to break ground included those who will see nursing education and research programs into the future: Tina Brashers, Suzi Burns, and Randy Jones represented the faculty; students were represented by Ashley Doughtie (BSN ’06 and Undergraduate Rep. to the Advisory Board), Naomi Gorton (MSN ’07 and member of the pilot CNL program), Serena Knick (BSN’09) and Michael Cary (PhD ’08).

Special guests included Virginia Delegate David Toscano, many members of the Board of Visitors, Medical Center VP/CEO Ed Howell, School of Medicine Dean Tim Garson, Chief Clinical Officer Pam Cipriano, Chief Operating Officer of the University Leonard Sandridge, Provost Gene Block, University Architect David Neuman, Bowie Gridley Architects: Cal Bowie, Pete Blum, and Paul Lund, and Project Manager Mark Stanis. Special friends of the School of Nursing included Francis Fife, Eleanor Goode, Gil and Charlotte Minor, Nancy and Randy Rizor, Becky and Pete Ruegger, Pat and Keith Woodard, past and present members of the Alumni Council and Advisory Board, and numerous other volunteers. Nursing alumni, faculty, staff and students were also gathered for this historic occasion in the life of the school.

UVa YOUNG ALUMNI COUNCIL SERVICE AWARD
The Young Alumni Council Service Award celebrates the individual service contributions of one or two outstanding University alumni, and provides a $1,000 donation to be directed to any part of the University.  This year's winners are Calvert Saunders Moore (Col '90) and Lisa Marie Kelley (BSN '99).  Lisa joined the School of Nursing Alumni Council and Advisory Board in 2004. She's been integral in looking for ways to tell the stories of nurses for the Virginia Legacy magazine. In her capacity as editorial board member for the Legacy magazine, she's been interviewing all the living former presidents of the School of Nursing Alumni Association. Her nominator said of her: "Lisa has served the School of Nursing through her multifaceted support of alumni interests, thoughtful input as a board member, recruitment of other alumni volunteers and participation in the 2005 Nursing Leadership Forum, through which she now serves as a mentor to students. In all these things Lisa is always responsive and responsible, and giving herself and her time for the good of the University community." Lisa dedicated her $1,000 gift to fund a nursing scholarship in 2006-07.

 Faculty Achievements

The Nursing Alumni Association is pleased and proud to announce the winners of the 2006 Faculty Awards.  The recipients will be introduced at the Hooding and Pinning ceremonies, and the awards will officially be presented in the fall. Details are at www.nursing.virginia.edu/alumni/default.asp.

Carolyn Ramwell - Excellence in Teaching Award
Doris Glick - Distinguished Professor Award
Catherine Kane - Faculty Leadership Award

Ann Hamric was the first nurse invited to present Ethics Grand Rounds at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. Staff from Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Boston Children’s Hospital, and Massachusetts General Hospital were also there – all of them Harvard teaching hospitals. She also did two days of consulting with nursing staff about ethical issues and, in March, she gave two presentations at the national meeting of General Clinical Research Centers and Research Subject Advocates, speaking on “Dilemmas Within the Research Team” and “Issues With Informed Consent.”

At this year’s International Society of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurses Conference, Catherine Kane gave the keynote Melva Jo Hendrix Lecture. Emily Hauenstein was presented with the Research Award in recognition of her contribution to the generation of new psychiatric-mental health nursing knowledge and the impact of her research on improved clinical practice, care delivery and/or policy. In addition, Elizabeth Erwin received a $500 Research Award to support a research project to begin this spring: Building Bridges Between Young People and Adult Mentors, a qualitative study examining differential needs of at risk boys and girls for mentoring and support.

Tina Brashers is proud and honored to be selected by the 2006 graduating class as the professor who contributed the most to their four years at the School of Nursing.

Sharon Utz just marked her ten year anniversary as a mentor in the UVA Faculty-Student Mentoring Program, sponsored through the Office of African American Affairs. Sharon was one of 11 faculty members who have been active in the program since its inception in 1995 to assist students of color with enhancing their intellectual and personal success at UVA. In 1998, the program was recognized by SCHEV as one of the “successful student retention models in Virginia’s colleges and universities.”

Anita Thompson-Heisterman and several students (see below) were recently inducted in Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership honor society

Wahoo cheers for first-year nursing students Jordan Elway and Katie Shannon, members of the Women’s Lacrosse team that sealed the 2006 ACC Championship with their decisive win (13-8) over the top-ranked Duke Blue Devils! The team played in the NCAA championship tournament but lost (8-7) against Princeton.

Congratulations to these rising third-year students selected for the School of Nursing 2006 Oxford Program: Maria Chang, Carolyn Cordtz, Courtney Crumpton, Maggie Erickson, and Anne Ragsdale. They will be participating in “Comparative Health Care: The Art & Science of Nursing.”

Justine Mize (BSN '07) was recently elected to the board of the National Student Nurses’ Association, holding the office of Imprint Editor for the NSNA. According to the letter from the Executive Director of the organization, “This is indeed an honor for Justine who has demonstrated superior leadership ability.” During the past year, Justine as served on the Virginia Nursing Student Association (VNSA) Board as Editor of the Torch, the newsletter for VNSA.  Congratulations!

Kudos to these students on their recent induction in Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership honor society: Sarah Vannoy, Candice MacCutcheon, Leah Welbourn, Kelly Wood and Megan Ott.  Selection to Omicron Delta Kappa is based on "exemplary character, responsible leadership and service in campus or community life, superior scholarship, genuine fellowship, and consecration to democratic ideals."

Congratulations to these PhD students who most recently successfully defended their dissertations: Cheryl Dumont, John Kirchgessner, Karen Rose, Irma Mahone and Tusana Thaweekoon.  On Sunday, May 22, a total of ten new doctors of nursing walked the Lawn.

Each year the Raven Society awards a $2,000 scholarship to one student from each school of the University. Scholarship recipients are selected based on the following criteria: 1) Outstanding achievement in the classroom, 2) Unique achievement in scholarship outside the classroom, and 3) Leadership and community service. This year's recipient for the School of Nursing is third-year student Chantel Dean.  Several other nursing students were inducted this year in the prestigious Raven Society.  They were: Kelly Wood, Taylor Jakubowski, Jessica Southard, and Margie Kuczkowski.

Educational Support for Nurses Who Need It

It was cause for celebration when volunteers for the Regional Unit of the Virginias and Carolinas Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic (RFB&D) National Library finished recording three major nursing textbooks. The Regional Unit, headquartered in Charlottesville, had sought the opportunity to record these texts on the list of nationally requested books because two of the authors are local: Dean Jeanette Lancaster and Associate Professor Ann Hamric.

Jeanette and Ann were invited to the luncheon celebration for the dedicated volunteers who had recorded 2,870 pages in 272 hours of recording. Not only is the main text recorded, but also every table, chart, figure, caption, appendix and footnote; key terms and references are spelled out.

Dean Lancaster was also one of the volunteer readers – she spent some time early in the process in the recording booth herself. That some UVa students who have reading disabilities may ultimately benefit was seen as icing on the cake.
